When a cooperative is formed, it is important that certain steps and characteristics are observed. Learning and change begin with the very first step and must be fostered through the entire process. The potential artisans are often strangers to one another. Most have never worked outside the home and are inexperienced in working as part of a group. Not only do they need to acquire sewing and embroidery skills, a formidable challenge in itself, but they must also shoulder the responsibilities of production planning, raw material procurement, record-keeping, wage calculation and more. Navigating these complexities is where Satvi steps in. Working in partnership with SHARE and MarketPlace Mumbai, Satvi conducts multiple educational sessions to enlighten these women on the intricacies of establishing and managing cooperatives. This involves practical guidance on bank account setup, legal registration, financial bookkeeping, GST compliance and other fiscal obligations.
In 2017, Satvi assumed the stewardship of the Nirmaan Women’s Cooperative, an existing entity requiring stabilization. With the legacy of running it for 4 years, Satvi’s expertise developed. After dealing with and overcoming the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, Satvi reengaged its efforts.
In 2023, Satvi embarked on setting up a new cooperative in Nallasopara, facilitating the establishment of the Aakasa Women’s Cooperative. Satvi’s comprehensive training covers skill development, financial literacy, and cooperative management. As the group matures and attains stability in the coming years, Satvi envisions a seamless transition, allowing these empowered women to flourish independently.
